BRAVO Alert: Columbus Area Hate Crimes

Buckeye Regional Anti-violence Organization (BRAVO) has recently received multiple reports of anti-LGBTQ hate crimes. The incidents have occurred in the vicinity of LGBT establishments both in the Short North area and on the South side. Several of the incidents have involved both physical assault and robbery. BRAVO has good reason to believe that these attacks are anti-LGBTQ motivated.

According to Gloria McCauley, BRAVO Executive Director, "BRAVO believes that these incidents underscore the importance of a renewed discussion and action on hate crimes against LGBTQ people. Sadly, we know that hate violence is intended to send a message of hate and to instill fear throughout the entire community. Hate crimes are largely under-reported or not reported at all, and people are left feeling alone and vulnerable. BRAVO is a great resource – we are asking people to call and report – we can help."

It is Gay Pride season and BRAVO wants everyone to have a fun and safe Pride! Be alert, walk in groups, walk each other to your cars and be aware of your surroundings. Additional safety tips are available on our website. WWW.BRAVO-ohio.org.

Dare to Dream: Lifting the Veil of Secrecy for Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse

The program has campus and community co-sponsors. Campus co-sponsors including the OSU OutLaws, the OSU Counseling and Consultation Service, the OSU Sexuality Studies Program, and the OSU GLBT Alumni Society. Community co-sponsors include MaleSurvivor: The National Organization Against Male Sexual Victimization, the Buckeye Region Anti-Violence Organization, the Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence, and the Sexual Assault Response Network of Central Ohio.
This community awareness program is free and open to the public. It should be of especial interest to survivors of sexual abuse, men and women alike, to their loved ones, as well as to community advocates, mental health and social service providers, clergy, legal professionals, and all interested students.
The program is chiefly designed to illuminate the problems of male sexual victimization — victimization of both boys and men — and to give survivors a platform to speak out about the abuse they experienced. The program is also designed to share information on community resources that are available — both in the direction of healing and advocacy.

Specifically, the program includes a viewing of two recent episodes of the Oprah Winfrey Show that featured 200 male survivors of abuse. After the showing, psychologist Dr. Howard Fradkin, who was featured as an expert on the show, will be joined by a panel of male survivors and community advocates to educate the community about the serious problems male survivors can face and the real possibilities for healing and hope. As Dr. Fradkin puts it, “We invite you all to dare to dream you can achieve recovery as a male survivor, and as an advocate or family member, can provide necessary support in the process of healing.”
